Players that Have Impressed During 2020 Spring Training

The Phillies have had a very good spring so far, as they are currently 11-4-1. All the players have impressed, (some young, some vets, some minor leaguers, and some major leaguers). but some more than others. Here are the players who have impressed me so far during spring training.

The first on the list is Alec Bohm. Bohm is hitting .444 so far with an OPS. of .921. Everyone knew he was special, and he’s having a very good spring which is proving it. They’re not amazing numbers; his power numbers are not there right now, but they are good nonetheless. He has really impressed me a lot so far, and I’m excited to see what he can do the rest of the spring. As everyone may know, I think the Phils should bring Bohm up to the bigs right out of spring training and stop babying their players, but it definitely depends on the rest of Bohm’s spring.

Phillies non-roster invitee and top 3B prospect Alec Bohm lines a base hit against Detroit on February 22nd.

The second person on the list is a major-leaguer, Bryce Harper. While the whole league is shouting at him and saying he’s overrated, he has really impressed this spring. As soon as Harper arrived in Clearwater back on February 16th, he started practicing using the middle of the field in the batting cages saying, “I want to cut down on my strikeouts and stop pulling off the ball.” Everyone probably knows that was a big problem for Harper last season, and the reason he hit .261. But this spring Harper has already blasted three homers, one reaching the highway behind the right field berm at Spectrum Field. I think Harper is set to surprise a lot of fans across the MLB in 2020.

Number three on the list is minor league infielder Luke Williams. Not many people know who Williams is, but the guy who played AA ball in Reading last year is tearing the cover off the ball down in south Florida. He already has 10 hits over just 19 plate appearances this spring. On Monday against Atlanta, Williams drove in the go-ahead run for the Phils during the ninth inning in what would turn out to be a 6-4 win for Philadelphia. Williams will not make the team out of the spring, but I wouldn’t be surprised to see him in the majors soon. It looks like he could turn into a good young star.

The last player on this list is Jay Bruce. Bruce has had a very good under-the-radar spring. He is hitting .333 so far with a homer. Not bad at all. This is especially good to see with the news that Andrew McCutchen will not be ready for opening day with his ACL tear injury. Because of that injury, Bruce may have to step into a starting role early in the season. He’s definitely making a good case for himself to be the Phils starting left fielder on opening day.

So to recap, Alec Bohm, Bryce Harper, Luke Williams, and Jay Bruce have impressed me in the first half of spring training. The Phils still have a lot of spring action ahead of them, and hopefully more players will impress me over the next half month.
