Guerra and Offense Struggle, Phils Drop Game One to the Yanks, 6-3

The Philadelphia Phillies (1-3) fell to the New York Yankees (8-1) on Monday night at Yankee Stadium 6-3.

Overall, not mad at this loss, Yankees ace Gerrit Cole pitched very well through six allowing just a solo homer to Jay Bruce. Cole had to leave the game after an about 45-minute rain delay.

Phillies DH Jay Bruce rounds third base after belting a solo homer to right center field in the top of the third inning.

I was happy with the way RHP Jake Arrieta pitched, giving up three runs in five innings. He was efficient, had movement, and was getting plenty of ground ball outs. When in mid-season form, Jake easily could’ve gone six or even seven innings tonight. Arrieta got some bad luck on two of his three earned runs tonight, a couple “Yankee Stadium Homers” snuck out down the right and left field lines. Deolis Guerra came in to relieve Arrieta in the bottom of the sixth, just two walk a guy, hit Giancarlo Stanton, then shortly after gives up a three run shot to Gio Urshela. Other than Guerra, Adam Morgan, Tommy Hunter, and Jose Alvarez all looked good mowing down Yankee hitters. The offense showed some signs of life in the seventh and eighth, managing some baserunners and mustering two runs to make it a three run game, but the Phils went down 1-2-3 in the ninth and fell to New York.

DJ LeMahieu hits a solo shot, puts the Yanks up 1-0.

A look ahead:

The Phils get another day off tomorrow (as if they haven’t had enough of those) as the game was postponed due to Hurricane Isaias. They’ll play a doubleheader at Citizens Bank Park on Wednesday starting at 4:05 PM. The Yankees will be the home team for game one, the Phils will get the advantage in game two.
