Potential Eagles 2021 Draft Gems, Episode 5: Aakiel Greer

Going into the 2020 NFL season, we still have the question of “does Philadelphia still need a wide receiver?”. With the recent news of Alshon Jeffrey being on the trade block, I think I have a big body receiver that can fill the void in the off-season.

Meet Aakiel Greer, the 6’4 200-pound receiver for St. Augustine University. In 2019 Aakiel had 17 receptions, 269 yards, 3 touchdowns and 15.82 yards per reception. You might look at this stat line and think that isn’t very impressive; however, when you look at the scheme they were in last year at St. Augustine it was reducing his talent.

Things that he brings to the Eagles would be elite size, body control and the ability to win jump balls over defenders. One of the things during the Superbowl season a few years back was Carson Wentz hitting on tight windows with his receivers and tight ends winning those battles. With the reliable hands and size of Greer, he would fit well with the receiving core.

With the lack of elite secondary pieces in the rivals of the division, I think adding youth mixed with height would elevate the team giving them an edge vs those opponents. The receiving core would have speed in Jackson and Reagor. They already one jump ball specialist in JJ Arcega Whiteside. Next you need size. Out of all the wideouts, the tallest is 6’3 in Jeffrey who might not be on the team come 2021.

Currently Aakiel is projected to be a UDFA (undrafted free agent). With a strong 2020 campaign, Aakiel might rise up on the Eagles board and receive an preseason invite.
